A tenancy has rent applied to it through one or more rent schedules.
Typically, just one schedule is in play, applying a rent amount due from the tenant each period. However, if housing benefit (Universal Credit) is being used to pay an element of the rent, then this needs to be dealt with separately, on its own schedule.
Usually there will be a proportion paid by benefit, and the remainder made up from a tenant contribution - often referred to as the "tenant shortfall", so there will a separate schedule for each.
Each of these scenarios is considered in the links below, as well as varying benefit amounts.
- A mixture of rent due from benefit and tenant
- All rent due from benefit
- Tenant/benefit breakdown varying over time
